Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
With digital cameras you can see the images straight after you have taken them, easy to load onto computer, pick and choose the photos you want printed at a print station. There are many positives around digital cameras some of the negative things are you have to make sure they are charged, make sure you have the memory card in the camera, don’t loose the cord to the computer as they are expensive to replace.

Some of the ways that digital images can be stored, are on memory sticks, store straight to the computer. Many computer programs can manipulate pictures and at the photo printer station you can add different things to your photo, such as borders, change colours etc.

What sort of ethical issues may arise with digital camera use? As discussed in previous blog there are many ethical issues such as gaining permission to take a photo, where the photo goes after it is taken, i.e. is it uploaded on to facebook or the like where it can be copied by anyone.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice
In occupational therapy the images could be taken to show someone’s progress, could be taken to show crafts etc that the individual has made. Home alterations that have been done or what needs to be done. Photos can be used in power point presentations. There are many more

Services offered by filckr.com are uploading photos, share photos and edit photos. There are many different storage websites if you look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photo_sharing_websites There is a huge list of different websites.

Digital zoom is decreasing the angle of view of an image with a digital camera or video camera. This is done by cropping the image down. Whereas Optical zoom is the magnification of a digital image using physical changes in the focal length of the zoom lens to magnify the image. Optical zoom is the preferred method of magnifying an image for digital photographers because it doesn't negatively affect image quality, as does digital zoom.

The term Megapixel refers to the size of an image, usually in reference to a photo from a digital camera or camera phone. Megapixel means one million pixels. The resolution of digital cameras and camera phones is often measured in megapixels. For example, a two-megapixel camera can produce images with two million pixels. Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical issues

Information Technology is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware."
Retrieved 8march 2010 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology

Technology has become very common place in our society it has become part of our social norms to use many different technologies on a daily basis.

Some of the IT devices or systems I feel comfortable using are things like T.V, video, DVD, digital camera, video camera, computers, face book, bebo, internet banking and the list could go on and on.

How is IT being used in Occupational Therapy practice? Occupational therapist’s send emails to other health professionals, they can use power point for their presentations, many community OT’s have cell phones on them in case of emergency etc. You could direct a client to a web site to get more information on a subject. Most importantly OT’s submit the competencies each year to the OT board of NZ, for their registration.

People can misuse information on the internet. They don’t get consent to use images on the internet then other people can use those images, the internet has not privacy.
Computer ethics “is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.” Retrieved 8 march 2010 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_ethics.

Intellectual property “is a term referring to a number of distinct types of legal monopolies over creations of the mind, both artistic and commercial, and the corresponding fields of law.” Retrieved 8 march 2010 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property

Social justice mostly refers to an ideal of society where “justice” refers to economic status rather than to the administration of laws. It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society, although what is “fair treatment” and “just share” must remain unclear or subject to interpretation. Retrieved March 8, 2010 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_justice

With informed consent the individual concerned must have adequate reasoning faculties and be in possession of all relevant facts at the time consent is given

As Occupational Therapists it is important to have an understanding of ITC and ethical issues in our practice and daily lives. This is due to new technologies being developed and becoming more common place. Understanding ethical issues will help us to maintain our client’s privacy.
